These two hills are located at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in Sioux County. Agate Fossil Beds is located along Highway 29, about 23 miles south of Harrison, or 46 miles north of Scottsbluff. The hills are accessed from the 2.5 mile Fossil Hills Trail from the Visitor Center. They are not necessarily difficult to climb, though park officials would rather not have visitors hike to the summits of either, due to crumbly rock and the risk of slipping on that rock.
This is all open prairie around these hills, and the trail has a boardwalk over the swampy Niobrara River along the way. It is illegal to pick up fossils and rocks here, and this is enforced with stiff fines. |
