Walter Reed Butte does not garner nearly as much attention as the summits in the eastern half of Fort Robinson State Park. This area of the park sees occasional traffic in the form of state park maintenance Jeeps and horseback riders. To reach the summit, take the Soldier Creek Road from the park headquarters. When you reach the little road up to the Mexican Canyon parking lot, turn there and park wherever you can find space. The trailhead simply says "Service Road", which limits travel to hikers, park Jeeps, and horseback riders. Follow the road/trail up about a mile or so, until you are just under the summit area. From there you will have to choose your own route to scramble to the top. Once on top, you will find this butte is like many others in this region, in that it is really part of a greater ridge system. The views will be great, and you might see some bighorn sheep. If you have the time, continue on up the trail to explore Mexican Canyon. The rock formations there will make you glad you brought a camera. The Nebraska Interactive Trails map system makes planning your route much easier.
